Qualification in Resilient Technologies

Inspired by Tairāwhiti to serve any constrained region where the standard tech-stack is too expensive, too dependent, or just not right.

This proposal is actively under consideration as a delivery of the Level 5 Diploma in Information Technology, Level 6 Certificates in Applied Digital Technology & Applied Software Development, and/or as a suite of micro-credentials.

The problem

Converging technology pressures

Regions are precarious

We can't take connectivity, power, or corporate goodwill for granted. Climate events, isolation, and economic imbalances mean resilience has to be built locally.

Digital rents keep rising

Market-leading online services are heavily subsidised by investor capital. And when that bargain ends the services get worse, the rent goes up, and inequalities are exacerbated.

AI has upended things

Students must be AI-fluent to be employable, while the same tools are pushing down on the entry-level roles they’re training for.

The opportunity

Our qualifications haven't imagined this yet

Imagine the technologist who can reclaim machines, stand up their own servers, run local open source AI, integrate physical sensors, fly drones, and configure solar; all in service of their community.

That person has no clear tertiary pathway in Aotearoa yet.

Proof in doing

AI has broken conventional written assessment, and not everyone's academically-minded anyway. So in this qualification every credential is assessed the same way:
